April is National Fair Housing Month

The conference theme is
"Know Your Housing Rights: The Fair Housing Laws."
Joining the City of Raleigh as sponsors are Legal Aid of North Carolina, Wake County, AT&T, the Town of Cary and the N.C. Housing Finance Agency.

The conference will focus on building inclusive communities that provide affordable housing opportunities. Participants also will learn about policies and practices that restrict housing choice and how to overcome such impediments.
The training on Friday has received approval from the NC State Bar for 3.25 hours of general CLE.
The session on Friday, April 29, will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Raleigh Convention Center. The keynote speaker will be Sara Pratt, deputy assistant secretary in the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. She will address fair housing on the national level and the requirements for states receiving federal funds to further fair housing. She also will talk about revised HUD requirements that require local governments to take a more realistic look at impediments to fair housing choice.
The session on Saturday, April 30, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Martin Street Baptist Church, 1001 E. Martin St. N.C. Court of Appeals Judge Wanda Bryant will discuss lending and fair housing. On that day, children in kindergarten through grade 6 will participate in a youth session on fair housing rights.

NOTE: Seating is LIMITED to the first 200 registrants on Friday, and the first 100 registrants on Saturday.

April 18th The Greensboro Human Relations Department and HUD will be sponsoring a Fair Housing Month Program in recognition of April being Fair Housing Month. There will be two programs: (1) a morning program with speakers including a keynote address by HUD Deputy Secretary Ron Sims from the Washington, DC office, and (2) an afternoon fair housing training. You are cordially invited to attend both at no charge. Please RSVP to me no later than Wednesday, April 13th if you will be attending the morning program (see attached flyer) because I need a count for the continental breakfast. You do not have to RSVP for the afternoon fair housing training and you may bring as many persons as you like.
Both events will take place at the International Civil Rights Center and Museum, 134 S. Elm Street, Greensboro, NC (attendees should use the February 1 Place entrance) on April 18th with registration and a continental breakfast beginning at 8:30am and the program starts at 9:30am. Registration for the afternoon program (fair housing training) will begin at 1:30pm. Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or to RSVP for the morning program.

Test Out Option Available

Week 1 and Week 2 Investigation Training will be available Spring 2011.

For practitioners with at least two years experience in the civil rights field, the Academy offers a Test Out option for Week One and Week Two of the core curriculum. "Experience" means that the individual has been personally engaged in investigations on a full-time basis, or as his or her primary duty. Included is:

  • Experience as a fair housing/civil rights investigator in the public or private sector.
  • Experience with government, or other organizations performing duties and responsibilities substantively related to investigations.
  • Experience as a supervisor or director who is responsible for the case management of fair housing/civil rights investigations.

Online Courses Available


The Patricia Roberts Harris National Fair Housing Training Academy is pleased to announce Week 1 and Week 2 Investigation Training is now available online. These courses are offered through NFHTALearn, NFHTA's elearning system and are asynchronous. This asynchronous elearning makes it possible for students to log on to NFHTALearn at any time and work through guided lessons and download documents, contribute to class discussions through the course forums, or send messages to teachers or peers.
